Holiday promises of gathering the whole family under one roof for togetherness. But which particular roof you assemble under, everyone knows, has the potential to lead to some holiday sneer. As an alternative, renting a vacation home for the holidays can factor a degree of neutral ground into the get-the-whole-gang-together equation. Staying in a rental property has the potential to be more rewarding than gathering at a hotel, despite the latter being more likely to offer a bargain. Yet rental properties have the added advantages of full kitchen facilities, private hot tubs under starry skies and multiple floors of accommodation to keep combative parties apart. Nevertheless, there's still an art to picking the right rental home for your crew.
If you decide to rent your property as a holiday let, you will need to set clear objectives surrounding the length of time you intend to rent it and the income you expect to achieve. Associated with these decisions are questions around maintenance of the property, legal and tax issues in the country where you purchased and how best to promote your accommodation to holidaymakers. Never under-estimate the importance of cleaning of holiday letting.
Wastepaper bins that haven't been emptied, sweet wrappers lurking in a far corner under the kids' bunk beds and greasy cookers all add up to an odious start to anyone's holiday. It's essential to have good, reliable cleaners going into the property between lets - many owners send them in for a mid-week clean as well. Besides going down well with your visitors, it gives you an excuse to keep an eye on things. Don't expect your property to be in pristine condition after the letting period. There'll always be visitors who leave a mess behind them, break things, trample your plants etc. It's all part and parcel of the business.

Holiday Tipping Guide
If you can give, just not as much, here are some things to keep in mind as you triage your holiday tipping list. Prioritize your most important service providers. If someone's work makes your life dramatically better, that person should be at the top of your holiday tipping list. The trusted housecleaner, the hairdresser who fits you in at the last minute and the baby sitter who always does a great job tending your kids should get more of your holiday tipping resources than service providers you use infrequently.
Don't skimp on your employees. If you have household workers, such as a nanny, a housekeeper or a caretaker for an elderly relative, Post cautions against forgoing holiday bonuses if at all possible. The holiday bonus is often considered part of the employee's compensation, Post notes. It all depends on your past practices, what's customary in your area and what you promised when you hired the person, of course, but withholding or shortchanging the bonus could be considered a cut in pay and you could wind up losing a valued worker because of it.
If you live in a building with a doorman, superintendent or both, failing to tip can lead unfortunately to bad service. The higher the customary tip, the less likely a plate of cookies will cut it. Talk to your neighbors to see what is the going rated and try to come close to that figure to make sure your packages still get delivered and your friends can get into the building. In addition to seemingly endless gift lists to satisfy, the holiday season presents many with the perplexing issue regarding service tipping. A popular consumer magazine has recently provided guidelines that may aid in simplifying the question of who to tip, how much to tip and when holiday gratuities are appropriate.

10 Tips For Having a Great Family Vacation With Teens
10 Tips For Having a Great Family Vacation With Teens
Here's what we learned about traveling successfully with tweens or teens.
1. Get input from your teens about your plans - Obviously if you're expected at a family reunion, then that's where you're going.
2. Be realistic about how long you'll be gone - If your son or daughter is really social, two weeks away from peer group may be torturous.
3. Give each family member an opportunity to decide a group activity for part of each day - This practice works great as long as you've got one ground rule: If anyone mopes or complains during someone else's chosen activity, then the party pooper loses his/her right to choose an activity that day.
4. Maintain schedules - Schedules create a rhythm for the day. That reduces some of the inevitable stress of being away from home.
5. Bring audiobooks for road trips - If the books are well chosen (mysteries are great) then getting back in the car for 8 more hours of driving can actually be something everyone looks forward to.
6. Factor in jet lag - Jet lag can knock you off balance for a day or more. At its worst, it can leave you feeling flattened you like a steamroller victim with the flu.
7. Explore your new environment as a family, but pace yourself - Feel compelled to see every single thing listed in the guidebook? If it feels like you're rushing around then you probably are.
8. Give yourself permission to abandon some of your attitudes - Vacations take you out of the norm so they're great times for self-exploration. If you (and your teens) choose not to limit yourselves with your usual strong opinions ("I don't like boats." "I never eat anything with coconut in it."), you can become a freer you.
9. Keep a family travel journal - Words capture a completely different kind of memory than photos. Interactions between people you passed on the street, a conversation with a shopkeeper, your feelings during a wild-life encounter, etc.
10. Relax - You're on vacation. Consciously choose to leave stress-related worries at home. They'll be fine without you. Give your mind as well as your body a chance to re-center and regain equilibrium. When you're not stressing you show your best side to your family. And that's the best part of any family vacation.
